Over the course of his six previous albums, starting with his debut Painted Diaries in 2009, Reza Khan has worked with some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz while developing a fascinating trademark fusion of pop, jazz, soul and world influences. His empowering world jazz guitar music is steeped in his international roots and status as a socially conscious musical citizen of the world. Along the way, the Bangladesh-born, NYC-based composer and guitarist has enjoyed several breakthrough hits on the Billboard Jazz chart, including his first Top Ten single “Drop of Faith” (featuring Nils) from his critically acclaimed fifth album Next Train Home and “Waiting for the Sky” from the 2021 collection Imaginary Road. Khan’s latest album, the intriguingly titled Mystical, features songs as infectious and radio friendly as they are brilliantly performed. Now, the much-anticipated 8th album, titled Moon Tree is to be released this spring.

Jazz Weekly Review – Reza Khan: Mystical by George W. Harris • May 23, 2024 Sleek and muscular smooth jazz is delivered by Reza Kan, playing both electric and acoustic guitar, with a mix and match team of masters including Jeff Lorber/key, Jimmy Haslip/b, Gary Novak/dr, Mark Egan/b and David Mann/key-dr-fl-ts. Khan’s acoustic nylons run well on the pretty “Falcon” with Lorber getting some leg work. Egan creates an R&Bish Bahia Mama” with the sweet voice of Jennifer Griimm, and some hip electric guitar work by Nils adds soul to Look at the “Bright Side”. Most of the drumming is programmed by Mann, giving a synthy feel to the foundation, but it mostly works, as on “Catalina’s Dream” with keyboardist Philippe Saisse”, while Bob James’ piano gives a Steely Dan feel to “Language of Love”. Accessible strings.
